The Farm of Abdurrahman bin Awf: A Historic Oasis in Aliyat Al-Madinah
The Blessed Land: The Farm of Abdurrahman bin Awf in Madinah
Nestled in the serene highlands west of the Prophet’s City lies a place where Islamic history feels alive. This is the historic farm of Abdurrahman bin Awf Az-Zuhri (رضي الله عنه), one of the ten Companions promised Paradise. More than just agricultural land, it is a living monument to a great hero of Islam, a site of blessing, and a story of profound brotherhood.
Once known as the “Farm of Sawala,” it is today a beautifully maintained green oasis under the care of Ashareef Mohammed Ashahat, offering visitors a unique connection to a glorious past.
Abdurrahman bin Awf Az-Zuhri: The Noble Companion
To appreciate this land’s significance, one must know the esteemed Companion it belonged to.
- His Lineage and Early Faith: Hailing from the Banu Zuhrah clan of the Quraysh, Abdurrahman bin Awf was a relative of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). He was among the first eight people to embrace Islam and was part of both migrations: first to Abyssinia and later to Madinah.
- Promised Paradise: He holds the distinguished honor of being one of Al-‘Ashara al-Mubashsharoon—the ten Companions to whom the Prophet (ﷺ) gave the glad tidings of Paradise during their lifetimes.
- The Prophet’s Blessing: The Prophet (ﷺ) made a specific supplication for him: “O Allah, bless for Abdurrahman bin Awf his acquisitions.” This divine blessing manifested in his incredible success as a merchant. He became known for his vast wealth, which he never hoarded but spent generously in the cause of Allah.
A Lesson in Brotherhood: Abdurrahman bin Awf and Sa’d bin Al-Rabi’
The story of this farm is intertwined with one of the most beautiful narratives from the Hijrah. Upon the Muslims’ arrival in Madinah, the Prophet (ﷺ) established a bond of brotherhood (Al-Mu’akhah) between the Migrants (Muhajireen) and the Helpers (Ansar). He paired Abdurrahman bin Awf with Sa’d bin Al-Rabi’ Al-Ansari (رضي الله عنه).
Sa’d bin Al-Rabi’ was one of the foremost nobles of the Ansar from the tribe of Al-Khazraj and a fierce defender of Islam. He was known for his immense wealth and generosity. Embracing this new bond wholeheartedly, he made a legendary offer to his brother Abdurrahman, demonstrating the ultimate meaning of sacrifice:
“I am the wealthiest among the Ansar, so I will give you half of all my wealth. And I have two wives; see which one you prefer, and I will divorce her for you so that you may marry her.”
Abdurrahman bin Awf’s response has echoed through history as a lesson in dignity, empathy, and self-reliance. He replied:
“May Allah bless you in your family and your wealth. I have no need of that. Just show me the way to the market.”
He sought not charity, but opportunity. He went to the market, began trading, and soon achieved great success—a success undoubtedly fueled by the Prophet’s dua. This story encapsulates the true spirit of Islamic brotherhood: the Ansar’s unparalleled generosity met with the Muhajir’s noble self-respect and ambition.
